Jazz - Suni
Format : CD

Suni 嬌柔情感
By Dotschy Reinhardt
GMC 030
(Galileo Music)

Yet on her first album „Sprinkled Eyes“ Dotschy Reinhardt broached the issue of the loss of identification of the german Sinti people in her song Sinto. Dotschy Reinhardt makes use of her prominent family name and her relation to the most important european jazz-musician of the 20th century Django Reinhardt to tell the world from her people. While recording her new CD she wrote a book with the title “Gypsy” and tells her readers about the culture, language and the few ups and lots of downs that the Sinti people lived since there arrival in Germany almost 600 years ago. Dotschy broached a topic which is stamped by prejudice and which is very little known by most Germans.
Dotschy Reinhardt calls herself proudly Sinteza, a member of the Sinti people and sings once again half of the songs on “Suni” in her language Romanes. She wrote half of the songs herself, added new lyrics to classics like Djangology (Django Reinhardt) and “Me hum Mato” (Schnuckenack Reinhardt) and interprets in her very own style classics like “Days of Wine and Roses” (H. Mancini”, “Last Tango in Paris” (Gato Barbieri/Dory Previn) and “Pretty Butterfly” (Ciro Pereira, Mario Albanese) where she duets with her husband David Rose.

She shows great aptitude in the selection of her musicians and especially the guitarrists on „Suni“ are chosen with a knowing hand. Next to the musicians already heard on her first album „Sprinkled Eyes“ Christian von der Goltz (Piano, Rhodes), Scott White (double bass), Uli Bartel (violin, mandolin), Armando Chuh (percussion) and Alexej Wagner (guitar) she invited her cousin Lancy Falta who is probably one of the best gypsy jazz guitarrists in Germany (current CD „In the Fields“) and recorded with Django Reinhardts grandson David Reinhardt (guitar) and his trio. Dotschy met David in a studio in Paris and recorded „Days of wine and roses“, „Djangology“, „Young men at the bar“ and „Lonely Shadows“. David Reinhardt presents himself as a sensitive musician, great and virtuoso guitar player and fantastic leader of his trio. You hear the intimate atmosphere of this meeting in a small studio in Paris. These songs are connected smoothly with the songs recorded in Berlin and create a diversified and exciting vocal jazz album which stays fascinating from the groovy opener „Suni“, the swinging „Raga Tschi“ to the country song „Cowboys never cry“ and the cool gypsy classic „Me Hum Mato“.

Dotschy Reinhardt writes in her book that her biggest dream was to perform on stage. On Suni you hear her willpower that helped her to achieve her goal and that has made her develop her artistic profile since the release of her first album „Sprinkled eyes“. „Suni“ is not only another vocal-jazz-album, but a personal statement of a strong woman that is deeply rooted in her Sinti culture and who is demanding respect for her people.
